Without the exploration into the crust of the earth we would never have seen these beautiful things; learnt of their physical properties, and used science, ingenuity and necessity to transform these monolithic slabs into shelter and culture and place.

A parallel thought - our forefathers the Stoic philosophers of the Hellenistic period practiced the spiritual exercise “the View from Above” as detailed by Marcus Aurelius below:

“Watch and see the courses of the stars as if you were running alongside them, and continually dwell in your mind upon the changes of the elements into one another … When you are reasoning about mankind, look upon earthly things below as if from some vantage point above them.”

There has long been a meditative tradition and practice of removing the mind from the temporal as a means of accessing a greater spiritual understanding and engagement with the earth. In 320 BC the philosophers of ancient Greece imagined themselves above the earth in order to better engage with it. Today we do not have to imagine the earth from above, we see the earth from the sky, akin to these stones, in a way that they may have imagined. We are all connected, in time, in space, through energy and earth and matter. In these stones we feel both the awesome power of pressure and weight and time and in an uncanny way we too, see the earth in them. These come from the earth and one can at once read the earth in them.

They are microcosms; and in perceiving the micro one might come closer to knowing the macro..
